Wildlife In Nepal


Wildlife taditionally referred to non-domesticated vertebrates but now the term covers all the wild flora & faunas.Nepal having different climates is rich in bio-diversity.It is also rich in resources as there are several rivers and lakes.


There are three climatic regions in Nepal that are Himalayan region,Hilly region & Terai region.The climate is hotter as you travel from the Himalayans to hills to Terai.Nepal has established various national parks to conserve its faunas ever since 1973.Currently there are numerous wildlife reserves like Shivapuri Nagarjun National park,Parsa wildlife reserve,Chitwan National park,Lamtang NP & so on.
There are 181 mammals reported.Some are Bengal tiger,Bengal fox,Clouded leopard,corsac fox,India rhinocorous,marbled cat,red panda,tibetian fox,tibetian wolf & snow leopard.There are reptiles native to the nation from pit vipers to monitor lizards.Other examples are Bengal monitor,Gloydius himalayanus(pit viper) & elongated tortoise(Indotestudo elongate).
900 bird species are recorded to exist.The Danphe(pheasant) is the national bird.In addition there are 8 species of stork,5 species of pheasant,6 minivets,17 different cukoos,30 flycatchers & 60 species of warblers.
Notable plants include the garden angelica,Luculia gratissima,Meconopsis villosa,Persicaria affinis and Ruellia capitata.

Although Nepal is rich in bio-diversity,there is need for proper conservation by the government & the related agencies.These national parks should take strict actions to prevent illegal poaching & hunting.
